since there are fewer listeners than plays it would appear that much of the time no one is listening. Is this the final conclusion to the question "if a tree falls in the woods ..."

'Listeners' in this case means people who are subscribed (in a sense) to a particular artist.

It may be more like the sound of one hand clapping. :)
