I learned recently from my uncle that her parents wanted her to marry someone whom she did not want to marry, and so she fled to America.

In Chicago, she married Joseph Tikal, a Slovak who left a neighboring Transcarpathian village for Chicago seven years earlier, in 1904.

English translations below are via Facebook.

*

#історіяСвалява #Свалявськийрайон

Ervindorf - Neudorf with New Selo (New Suskovo), гадки: 1856: Ervinfalu, 1882: Ervinfalva, Szuszkó újfalu, 1895: Szuszkó-Ujfalu, 1910: Szuskóújfalu, Erwinsdorf, 1913: Szuszkóújfalu, 1925: Susko Nové Selo, Novo Selo, 1930: Selo Nové, 1944: Szuszkóújfalu, Сусково

The history of the village begins from 1850. His other name is New Suskovo, and at the times of the prosperity of the Austrian community, the settlement was called Neudorf and Erwinsdorf.

Because it was Erwin Schoenborn in 1856 that brought 12 families of colonists from German lands of the Czech Republic here to work in the forest. She was a dead end, information-wise, but I now have contacts to both her father’s Strauss lineage and her mother’s Baumann lineage.

I’ve also found matches for my maternal grandfather’s relatives in Denmark and my paternal side in Poland… and my maternal grandma’s family I can now trace back to arrivals to North America as far back as the 1600s, with multiple ancestors fighting in the Revolutionary War – including later-arriving German Hessian mercenaries who arrived circa 1776 as reinforcements for the British forces, then gambled big by turning against their British employers for a chance at a new life in America (my how times have changed – for my chance at a better life I’ve migrated back to Europe).

* * *

A Tip Regarding Best Sources of Correct Names and Dates

Census records are rarely a good source of correct names and birthdates. Think of it like this... when someone was responsible for quickly filling in the names and ages of a family of 8, 12 or 15 people, for a report that had a tendency to be focused on ethnicity, profession, and such, you will find a lot of discrepancies.

Birth, Marriage, and Death records tend to have the most accurate details for an individual, as they are more apt to be meticulously completed for that one person, with less time constraint.

I hope this helps anyone just beginning their genealogical research journey.

* * *

Am I Back to Blogger?

Yeah, this is an old blog and I’m dusting it off... might start musing here again.

Greetings from Brno, #GreatMoravia.

Jason

JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-17029350360085369872014-02-23T22:38:00.000+01:002014-02-23T22:38:00.106+01:00It's Complicated: Relationships in 2014Three articles were making the social-media rounds this February and, together, they just might be an odd enough trinity to tell us something about relationships in the year 2014.

First, an Atlantic article showing how Facebook can predict who will be in a relationship -- perhaps before the couple themselves are even aware of it.

Second, a Guardian reprint of a New York Times piece titled "Does equality kill sex?" -- with the result being that men who do only 'manly' things and don't try to 'help around the house' have sex more frequently and with partners who report greater sexual satisfaction.

And third, a short Independent article suggesting that polyamory may be the key to a longer, happier marriage -- that is, 'outsourcing' a few needs, as the needs couples place on each other are allegedly increasing over time.

*

After reading all three articles, I started to get the feeling, however, that there may not be anything 'new' to any of these studies. Of course two people will increase their communications before 'hooking up', of course male/female gender roles are adequately hardwired no matter how much we may try to reprogram them, and throughout all human history, of course, it seems to have been too much for one person to fulfill all of another person's emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical needs. It seems that the old saying "The more things change, the more they stay the same" has struck again, despite whatever 'newness' researchers try to attach to their data. Human relationships are just... complicated.JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-55756113791116837882012-09-05T12:12:00.003+02:002014-02-23T22:41:38.412+01:00New Jason Mashak poems en routeI'll soon have new work coming out in Amsterdam Quarterly and the revived Lummox Journal.
Maybe something to do with the moon's closest hovering in decades... or simply a convergence of obstacles to test my endurance. Regardless, April promises a new mentor in my life, a second daughter. On the poetic front, I'll be reading at the U.S. Embassy's American Center here in Prague, along with legendary Czech underground writer/musician/artist Pavel Zajíček and the notorious American fiction writer Brad Vice, to celebrate the release of a new Czech-English anthology (with a theme akin to 'self-exile') recently compiled and translated by poet-professors Matthew Sweney and Bob Hýsek.
I recall that as a teenager in north Georgia (the US state) the nearby towns would have them, and they were typically traced back to prank callers.

After attending Cirque de Glace today in Prague, which turned out to be a bit of a bomb but at least my daughter loved it (I would've preferred Cirque Erotique a la Plage), we headed home a different way to avoid the traffic that we were stuck in for far too long on the way to the event, and we ended up in the Czech town of Melnik, where we had dinner at a pizzeria and then stopped by TESCO (like a British Wal-Mart chain) on our way home.

We'd been there about 10 minutes when employees and a couple police officers began guiding everyone to the front, along with the news that there'd been a bomb threat.

In the US, a message like this would have sent shoppers running in a panic... but not here in old Bohemia -- no, Czechs being the infamous skeptics that they are, people just looked pissed off and slowly trudged along toward the front, many even stopping to buy smokes on the way out. I too doubted the reality of the threat, but I quickly got my daughter outside (just in case).

Afterward, I sent an sms to a friend who lives not far from there and mentioned sarcastically that "Melnik seems to be a hotbed of Muslim activity" (actually, probably the only extremist group anywhere near there would be Czech neo-Nazis), to which he reminded me that Czechs did invent Semtex.JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-38846309280484417832011-01-01T15:12:00.000+01:002011-01-01T15:12:55.218+01:002010 in Literary TermsIn terms of English-language literary endeavors in Prague, 2010 was a flourishing year, seeing multiple launches and events surrounding:
After various readings during the year at Shakespeare & Sons (Rakish Angel and Prague Microfest), Globe Books (GRASP), Anglo-American University (AAU Library - Spring Series), and Radost (Kral Majales launch), I was invited to read at Ostrovy bez hranic (Islands Without Borders festival, in conjunction with Palacky University), in the Moravian city of Olomouc (eastern Czech Republic), an experience that has turned out to be loosely connected with my poetry starting to be published in Czech (e.g., January 2011 issue of KAM v Brně, as well as an upcoming dual-language anthology of "self-exiled" poets in Czech Republic). Hopefully, my work will eventually make its way also into Slovak and Polish.JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-38350089108530776992010-04-28T09:23:00.001+02:002010-04-28T09:24:47.329+02:00Gmail Spam Alert: This did NOT come from Gmail (and their spam filter missed it!)from: Gmail accountsalert.era@gmail.com
I've been trying to learn Czech (and Slovak) for two years, partly so I can read stuff like this, as well as a plethora of Czecho-Slovak underground literature known as Samizdat.

The very first translation of Louis-Ferdinand Céline's Journey to the End of the Night was into Czech, reveals Anna Kareninová in Revolver Revue. Exactly 75 years ago, Céline happened to come to Prague for the first time. There he met the German filmmaker Karl Junghans, who had directed German and Czech films, including Takovy je zivot / Such is Life. Having seen the film in France and admired it greatly, Céline had a spontaneous idea for collaboration: "Although I do not understand [film] and am not sure whether a film could be made of it, I know that you are the only director in the world who could film Journey to the End of the Night according to my conception." Like many of the best ideas, it never came to fruition.

It's interesting to note that Celine himself wished for a Czech or German film version of the novel, if one was to ever be made. The U.S. already spends far more on its military than all of its "enemies" combined. Conversely, its education system is in ruins, the population increasingly illiterate (evident by the number of people who voted for Geezer/Dingbat (McCain/Palin), against their own interests, in the 2007 elections).

2. Czechs were occupied by Russian military for several decades. During this time, they began to love anything "American." Those who actually support the radar (and subsequent U.S. military bases) are still under this spell (caused mostly by Hollywood films - for example, they don't believe there are homeless people in the USA). The powerful minority of radar supporters have not yet realized that they'll be trading Russian occupation for American occupation.

3. It makes the Czech Republic, and especially Prague, a target.

4. It serves no strategic purpose that could not be better placed in already-occupied countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

5. The U.S. went nuts when Russia put similar weapons in Cuba, yet expects Russia not to mind it doing the same thing - putting missiles and radar bases on Russia's doorstep. How would the U.S. react if Russia installed a similar setup in Cancun or Montreal?

6. The majority of Czechs don't want it (apparently, Czech Republic is not a real democracy).

7. I was pleased. A typical list-making (over-analyzing) Virgo, I've been tracking the books I've read in an Excel spreadsheet for over 10 years. I was more than glad to have a way to share that information with friends, a way to see what they might be reading, and to answer any questions they might have about the books I've read.

So I signed up with Shelfari, and it was only later that I found there are several similar sites to choose from. So I did some digging around, and here are a few more I found:

http://www.goodreads.com/
http://www.gurulib.com/
http://www.librarything.com/

If you want to know which is right for you, there's a fairly in-depth review and comparison of Gurulib, Shelfari, and Librarything at the librarytwopointzero blog. Also, here's an article/review at Publishers Weekly.

Google, never to be outdone, launched their own version in Sept 2007, called MyLibrary. You can read more about Google's version on the Wired Blog.

And if you're still undecided, a few other sites are available:
http://www.whatsonmybookshelf.com/
http://www.bookswellread.com/
http://www.revish.com/

As for me, I'm glad I didn't research this earlier, before joining Shelfari, or I might've gone crazy with all the options. Overall, my Shelfari page is perfect for what I need it for, and it's got other features I don't even use (such as book reviews and book groups).

If you know of other sites, or would like to comment on any of the above, please leave it in the comments section.JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-7998810828723037242008-01-25T23:41:00.000+01:002008-01-25T23:50:38.624+01:00Ross Perot - On Money & Happiness"Right after my company got successful, as a young man I met some of the wealthiest people in the world. He was, after all, living in Brooklyn. By choice. When he didn't have to.

I just heard about his death via www... and while I was reading about it, about him (synchronistically, Don McClean's song "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" was playing on my speakers), I realized the most 'tragic' aspect of his loss: he was reported to have been a good father. And now his young daughter, Matilda, will feel the void more than anyone else.

My hat is off to the late Heath Ledger. Pending autopsy will show this or that, rumors and suspicions may or may not be confirmed, some overzealous religious wingnuts will proclaim it as God punishing him for playing a homosexual in Brokeback Mountain, but none of that matters.

What matters is that, even for the two years of her life, Ledger was a good father. And for that he has my respect.JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7863223120898640912.post-7910753136030204932008-01-13T01:13:00.001+01:002008-06-17T20:25:04.658+02:00Oscar Wilde's De Profundis

I recently saw the film Wilde, about Oscar Wilde, a man whose wit will be forever quoted. In their eyes prison is a tragedy in a man's life, a misfortune, a casuality, something that calls for sympathy in others. They speak of one who is in prison as of one who is 'in trouble' simply. It is the phrase they always use, and the expression has the perfect wisdom of love in it.

*

Nothing seems to me of the smallest value except what one gets out of oneself. We have forgotten that water can cleanse, and fire purify, and that the Earth is mother to us all. I feel sure that in elemental forces there is purification, and I want to go back to them and live in their presence.

*

I have grown tired of the articulate utterances of men and things. What disappointment!

Another big target is my recommendation of a Lonely Planet article about Russian spas in which the attendees flog each other. They find this when they search "naked Russians." Again, big disappointment.

So in tribute to these misguided search attempts for visual stimulation of a more pornographic nature, I am posting here a photo that will disappoint yet again! It's for all those who google "cameltoe" hoping for a glimpse of tight cloth against the female genitalia. YOU AIN'T GONNA GET IT HERE! LOLOLOLOLOLOL :P

JASON MASHAKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10894966416167058786noreply@blogger.com0
